Get Well Grounded | Holistic Health & Nutrition NEWS
A quick hello to announce a few new and upcoming things at Get Well Grounded:
*New Programs
*New Website
*New Presence
*New Post/Recipes
*New Topics?
Today is the first day of September, which used to mean it was starting to feel autumny, but hasn't so much in past years. We really are in the season of Late Summer, which is one of the 5 (not 4!) seasons recognized in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Around here, the first day of September means that my summer coaching offers transition into My 3 Newly Designed and Packaged Health Coaching Programs, which range from 14 days to 6 months in duration:
Also, I am currently working on the design of my NEW Website, which will integrate my blog, so you can find all the information you need from Get Well Grounded | Holistic Health & Nutrition in one place. We are working to transfer all the content from this blog over to the new site, so you'll lose nothing and gain tons. I'm really excited about it and will let you know as that gets closer. I expect the change to happen well before the end of September (fingers crossed!).

Get to Your Local Farmers Market -- It's So Good Right Now!
I just got back from one of my local farmers markets (in Portsmouth, NH) and everything was so beautiful that I just wanted to post a quick reminder for all of you to get out there too!
I only have time right now to post a few pics because then I'm off to a (belated) graduation party with a bunch of my fellow holistic health coaches from the Boston area. So, I hope these pics motivate you to get out to your local market. I'll post some recipes over the coming week using my ingredients gathered today:
- bok choy
- sweet red peppers
- yellow onions
- lacinato ("dinosaur") kale'
- rainbow chard
- a beautiful variety of cherry and grape tomatoes (check 'em out below)
- garlic
- cukes
- winter squash
- and maybe even the spicy Italian sausage (local, humanely raised/animal welfare approved) I got last week
| My Haul. Can't wait to start cooking! |
Recipes to follow.
Do you frequent your local farmers markets? Do you belong to a CSA? How's your garden doing?
Please share with us what you've been harvesting/buying and what you're doing with it.

Free Hugs for Graduation!
You may have already seen this video: Free Hugs in Sondrio, Italy, or one of the other Free Hugs video clips. They've been circulating and they are really wonderful. I don't even want to say that much about it. Just see for yourself. Trust me -- it's good stuff! What? You've already seen it? Go ahead and watch it again. Positive interactions, smiles, hugs, and even just positive thinking nourish us and keep us happy and healthy.

Oh right, the graduation part is this: on Sunday, July 25, we had our graduation ceremony in NYC at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. During my time at IIN, I met some really lovely people (you know who you are!) and had the rare opportunity to learn from some of the brightest doctors, healers, and teachers in our field, including John Douillard, Mark Hyman, Deepak Chopra, Andrew Weil, Geneen Roth, Marion Nestle, Bernie Siegel, Arthur Agatston, Sally Fallon, Harville Hendrix, Neal Barnard, David Wolfe, David Katz, Barry Sears, Annemarie Colbin, Joel Furhman, Paul Pitchford, and Joshua Rosenthal. And I logged a lot of time on buses between Boston and New York! But wow, time really flew by. Oh, and for those family and friends who thought I was finally done with school... not quite yet. I begin the Integrative Nutrition Graduate Immersion Program next month :-) Lifelong learner, what can I say?
If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about health coaching or about the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, contact me here. I'd be happy to talk about what I do and about my experience at IIN.

We Are How We Eat: Let's Make Some Food-Mood Connections
As you know from previous posts, I did a 10-day spring detoxification cleanse back in April. As part of that process, I kept a detailed food-mood log. I wrote down everything I ate and drank, what kind of activity I did, how I slept, how I felt (foggy, energetic, sad, focused, etc.), digestive problems, congestion, allergies, acupuncture appointments, everything. This is a really powerful (and simple!) tool.
Although each of us is an individual and we need to pay attention to our own unique reactions and patterns (yet another reason to keep a food-mood journal), here are a few common food-mood connections to consider...
Do you feel spaced out, sad, overly sensitive, or hyper? Hmmnn....where do sugar, chocolate, alcohol, fruit, and caffeine fit into your diet?
Do you feel impatient, frustrated, stubborn, stuck, aggressive, or controlling? If so, think about how much salt (not just table salt, but processed foods), meat, cheese and eggs are in your diet.
I encourage you to get a notebook or set up a spreadsheet on your computer and begin keeping a food-mood journal.
At the very least, record the following information: date, what you ate (everything you eat at meals, snacks, grazing), what you drank and how much (tea, coffee, soda, juice, water), physical activity, any comments about how you feel emotionally and physically, any cravings. This is one of my first exercises for my health counseling clients. I guarantee that by doing this you will: (1) learn something profound about your own food-mood connections; (2) have some accountability for your food and activity choices; and (3) increase your awareness of how much water you drink daily.
Have you tried keeping a food-mood journal before? Was it useful for you? Are you ready to try it, or try it again?
Eat Well. Live Well. Be Well.
Most people I know would call me a "healthy eater", but what does that mean? Yes, I cook the majority of my own food, I eat whole foods and avoid processed foods at least 90 percent of the time, but I still experience undesired symptoms sometimes. For me that can mean headaches, congestion, poor sleep, and intense food cravings. The problem with stepping back too far is that it's hard to see the connection between your symptoms and your lifestyle. You end up thinking: "What's wrong? This is so frustrating. I eat healthy. I live healthy. But I still have all these symptoms."
When you write down everything (everything!) and then review it, you really do see the patterns, and often the direct connections, between foods you eat and how you feel. For instance, I have discovered over the past month or so that for me, right now, nuts make me crazy (or "nuts", if you will). When I reintroduced nuts (organic, raw almonds and cashews -- healthy, right?) after my cleanse, I started experiencing hunger, cravings, and mild anxiety. Because I was paying attention and tracking everything in my food-mood log, I took nuts back out of my diet after a few days and I lost all those symptoms. There are reasons for this connection and it is also likely that the reaction is only temporary, but for now, for me, I've learned something very important to make me feel healthier and happier.
